2012 NFL Draft Winners: AFC West

Denver's top 3 picks got the headlines, but the Broncos got most of their value from the 4th round on...
We all love the brackets that come with college basketball in March, so I’ve decided to carry it over to a different sport. The madness started this past weekend with the 2012 NFL Draft and was shortly followed by a wild array of phone calls to undrafted NFL prospects. After all the dust had settled, fans were left asking, “Who had the best draft”? I’ve decided to not label every team with a letter grade, but to instead give you my take on their picks, needs, and value of where they selected prospects. I’ll then put them head to head with a team in their division and let them fight it out. The better draft advances for a shot as the divisional championship. Let the NFL madness begin…
Is Sarah Phillips “Ruining” My Future?
A friend texted me Saturday and asked if I felt Sarah Phillips was ruining any opportunities for me. I texted back “No” as I had done several times over the course of the past week – the same question posed repeatedly to me via twitter DMs, texts, Facebook, and even email.
This morning, I was asked by one of my kids’ teachers to speak with the class next week about being a female sports writer and about all the obstacles I have to overcome on a daily basis. I volunteer frequently at the school, and happen to live next door to my daughter’s fourth grade teacher, so my answer was naturally “Yes, of course.” After I replied to the email, I sent back another response asking, “What exactly do you mean by ‘obstacles’?” The answer I received was probably one I should have expected: “You know, with all the Erin Andrews’ out there and that girl that lied to ESPN.”
The Redskins Had to Draft Kirk Cousins
The NFL Draft never disappoints. Every year there are decisions made that leave draft followers scratching their heads. Washington had one of those moments, early on of the third day of the 2012 NFL Draft. I’ll admit, when the name of Kirk Cousins was called I was initially surprised. As time passed and I allowed myself to look at the decision from the point of view of the Redskins, I quickly realized how the selection was a no-brainer.
We are a week past the conclusion of this year’s draft, yet people are still shocked by this decision. I’ll lay out five different scenarios that could lead to this being one of the best value picks of this draft. The situations factor around Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins’ development. I’m not saying that I believe one way or another that these situations will play out but it would be foolish to act as if they aren’t possibilities.
2013 NFL Draft Top 5 Offensive and Defensive Prospects
Now that the 2012 NFL Draft has come to a close we will now take a look at the top offensive and defensive prospects for the upcoming 2013 season. After watching film I’ve noticed that this group is very defensive heavy with prospects that are long and athletic. The offensive side of the ball will surely not disappoint either. Please note that it’s early in the evaluation process and this list will change due to more film review and production on the field for the upcoming season.
* Underclassmen
Quarterbacks
- Matt Barkley, USC, 6-2 230
- * Logan Thomas, Virginia Tech, 6-6 262
- * Tyler Bray, Tennessee, 6-6 213
- Tyler Wilson, Arkansas, 6-3 220
- Landry Jones, Oklahoma, 6-4 229
Matt Barkley has started since his Freshman year and is a proven leader for the USC Trojans although I do have concerns about his arm strength. Thomas has great size and mobility that you look for in a signal caller. A concern of mine is will Thomas’s growth be stunted with the Virginia Tech having to replace four offensive lineman from this past season.
Thank You Junior Seau
With Junior Seau’s death officially being ruled a suicide, I feel this is a subject that we all need to address as a community and as lovers of sport. I remember watching a Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel episode earlier this year on the NHL Enforcer suicides last summer in relation to head trauma and depression. Regardless of how the science on this matter will build over the next several years and decades, I want to discuss what our impact, as fans, has on a players’ mentality & emotional health. These individuals live on a different level in life that most of us will never understand or experience. For NFL teams as an example, there is a maximum of 53 players on an active roster at any given time. That means that only 53 people will go on to win the Super Bowl…. 53 people along with a team of managers, support staff, and a league of fans. The pressure these guys must feel to perform and succeed has to be immense. You are responsible for making people (including your boss) lots of money, for making countless of fans happy, and for (most importantly in my opinion) self-actualizing your own dreams in life.

How We Really Feel About the Death of Junior Seau
American sports fans were shocked and saddened all over the country when it was learned former National Football League linebacker Junior Seau was found dead Wednesday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
But were we really saddened, or is it just an act?
Sure, it is always sad to hear of a famous athlete, celebrity, relative or goldfish passing. But we’re all like four-year-olds. We’ll just get a new one!
