The Next Tiger Woods?

Tamer Chamma

This weekend felt a lot like the second weekend in April back in 1997. A young up and coming golfer in his early 20’s with all the talent in the world winning his first major in record setting fashion. Fourteen years ago it was a 21-year-old Tiger Woods dominating the Masters with a tournament record score of 18 under par. The golfer and the major were different this weekend but the performance was the same. Rory McILroy, at the ripe age of 22, blew away the US Open field with a score of -16. It is the lowest score in the 111-year history of the US Open by four strokes. The previous record holder? You guessed it, Tiger Woods with a -12 back in 2000.

With Woods injured and aging the golf world is looking for the next golfer that can dominate the sport and provide healthy TV ratings. McILroy may be it. He is not as talented as Tiger was in his prime but he’s pretty darn close. He has also proved to be resilient in his youth with his US Open victory yesterday coming less than two months after he choked away a four stroke lead in the final round of the Masters. To be fair to Woods, he has never had to show this type of resiliency because he has never blown a lead of that size during the final round of a major. Still, with the many ups and downs that can occur during a golf career (just ask Tiger!), it’s good to know that the kid from Northern Ireland has some moxy.

2011 Masters: Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods & Nick Watney

Mike Cardano

On Thursday, the Masters gets under way at Augusta National as one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world, begins. Held every April, the Masters, is the first major golf tournament of the 2011 PGA year. The appeal of the Masters has grown over time as a result of great performances, traditions and a proud history. While the four-day tournament does in fact bring together the best golfers in the world, it seems all anyone wants to talk about is Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.

Not that anyone wagers on these things wink-wink, but just for shits and giggles, upon last look at the sports book that I have an account with (sorry mom, I have an account), Mickelson and Woods were the two favorites in the tournament. Surprise!

People want to see Phil and Tiger have a rivalry in the worst way, so much so that they appear willing to wager on it. It doesn’t matter if either of them were playing particularly well or not coming into this event; you could have written down on Christmas Day that Phil and Tiger were going to get money thrown their way in this year’s Masters.

Tiger Woods: My Swing

Ivanna Score

So if you haven’t yet heard, Tiger Woods is reaching out via cell phone, offering to school the world on his swing. If you are like me who first wondered why on Earth Tiger would do such a thing when it seemed like we had just forgotten about his shenanigans, I remembered that Tiger was originally known for his golf swing not his “SWING” if you know what I’m saying.

This week Tiger Woods launched an iPhone and iPod touch app that allows golfers the ability to improve their golf game through video analysis and instruction. Woods decided to go all out on the name of the app calling it “Tiger Woods: My Swing”. Although I am considering downloading the instruction app as I recently received an amazing set of pink accented golf clubs as a gift, I have yet to click “Buy Now”. Here’s why…

First of all, A+ on the name, Tiger – way to be creative. You would think that one of his people could have come up with something a bit cleverer.
