College Football Classified

Dory LeBlanc

Join us for College Football Classified each week as we gear up for the 2012 College Football Season. This is the program where NCAA Football and NFL Writer Dory LeBlanc and NFL Draft Analyst and NCAA Football Writer Trey Randall take an in depth look at the world of college football – from hot topics to specific schools and everything in between.

This week Dory and Trey begin the show discussing the event held Tuesday at NYU where Friday Night Lights author Buzz Bissinger and Foxsports’ Jason Whitlock went head-to-head in a debate over banning college football. (DOH!)

They are then joined by CrystalBallRun.com‘s managing editor Aaron Torres who gave his opinion why the NYU debate was preposterous. After some talk about the hot topic of the month – head injuries, the three discuss the proposed playoff scenario including Big 10 Commissioner Jim Delaney’s comments regarding Alabama and Nick Saban’s response. Dory, Trey, and Aaron speak for a few minutes about how the rematch between the Crimson Tide and LSU in the BCS National Championship Game was not only warranted, but why Alabama was the best team in the nation in 2011.

Is Sarah Phillips “Ruining” My Future?

Dory LeBlanc

A friend texted me Saturday and asked if I felt Sarah Phillips was ruining any opportunities for me. I texted back “No” as I had done several times over the course of the past week – the same question posed repeatedly to me via twitter DMs, texts, Facebook, and even email.

This morning, I was asked by one of my kids’ teachers to speak with the class next week about being a female sports writer and about all the obstacles I have to overcome on a daily basis. I volunteer frequently at the school, and happen to live next door to my daughter’s fourth grade teacher, so my answer was naturally “Yes, of course.” After I replied to the email, I sent back another response asking, “What exactly do you mean by ‘obstacles’?” The answer I received was probably one I should have expected: “You know, with all the Erin Andrews’ out there and that girl that lied to ESPN.”

On this first edition of College Football Classified, Dory and Trey talk in depth about the passing of Junior Seau, head injuries at all levels of the game, and how to keep the players safe. Trey shares his perspective as a former linebacker (UL-Lafayette) on the violence of football, while both stress the importance of athletic trainers present at every practice and game starting at high school in order to properly detect when a player has a concussion.

Next, our hosts talk about the three arrests this week from prominent programs all involving “good kids” that made bad choices, and what the future may hold for Tommy Rees (QB, Notre Dame). Already in a quarterback competition in South Bend for the starting position, Rees’ arrest may have made the decision easier for Brian Kelly. That leads into the final topic of the the program – college commits who decommit and how the criticisms of these young men can be a little harsh.

Analyzing Round #3 of the 2012 NFL Draft

Dory LeBlanc

Dory LeBlanc, Jayson Braddock and Jake Ciely bring you their take live from Radio City Music Hall

1. (64) Indianapolis Colts – Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson

If the Colts want to go with a two TE set, they’ll start with the top two TEs in the draft.

Our take from Radio City

2. (65) St. Louis Rams – Trumaine Johnson, CB/S, Montana

Johnson’s size screams “Safety”, but Fisher insists he’ll be a corner. We’ll see if that changes, and that three CBs will possibly start.

Analyzing Round #2 of the 2012 NFL Draft

Dory LeBlanc

Dory LeBlanc, Jayson Braddock and Jake Ciely bring you their take live from Radio City Music Hall

1. (33) St. Louis Rams – Brian Quick, WR, Appalachian State

In the press conference at the end of the night, Les Snead said that Quick was a guy they had been targeting for a few weeks and that they knew at the end of the first round that this pick was taken.

Fantasy Impact: Big time upside, big time risk. We’ve been surprised by small-school WRs (Colston) before, but odds are at least a year away – more for keeper leagues

Our take from Radio City

2. (34) Indianapolis Colts – Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford

Andrew Luck’s favorite collegiate target will try to continue the trend in the NFL.

Fantasy Impact: Immediate Top 15 potential. Was the best Fantasy rated TE in the draft & will start from day one. Jimmy Graham a decent comparison

Analyzing Round #1 of the 2012 NFL Draft

Dory LeBlanc

Dory LeBlanc, Jayson Braddock and Jake Ciely bring you their take live from Radio City Music Hall

1. Indianapolis Colts – Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
There’s no surprise the Colts selected Luck as it was assumed since their season ended 2-14 and new GM Ryan Grigson confirmed the pick Wednesday. What’s important now is to make sure they give what they hope to be a replica of Manning’s success the protection he needs and the tools to succeed.

Fantasy Worth: Remember, seeing QBs succeed in Fantasy is a rarity. He’s not Cam Newton, but can succeed like or better than Dalton. Would take in Top 20 but around 15th QB after you already have a QB.

2. Washington Redskins – Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

Another no-brainer. The Skins gave up this year’s first and second round picks as well as their first round picks next year and in 2014 to the Rams so they could draft the QB who is a perfect fit for the Mike Shanahan offense. Unlike Luck, Griffin is starting off with a better cast surrounding him and should see success early.

Fantasy Worth: More upside than Luck as a rookie. Given his dual-threat ability, he could surprise like Cam. Would take after Schaub comes off the board.

Giving Chad Faulcon a Shot in the 2012 NFL Draft

Dory LeBlanc

Chad Faulcon (center) makes a tackle during the Player's All Star Game

When you hear “2012 NFL Draft” the first names that you think of are probably Andrew Luck, RG3, Trent Richardson, Mo Claiborne, or Justin Blackmon. And rightfully so; these five young men played for some of the biggest programs in college football. This time of year when you played for a powerhouse your name becomes a powerhouse.

But hundreds of young men, just as talented, play for much smaller programs in much smaller conferences. You’re about to meet one of them.

A player who was a regional defensive player of the year, conference defensive player of the year, and an All-American.  The reason you haven’t heard of him is quite simple: he plays for a Division III school.

Jenkins talks about what he learned from his mistakes, and what kind of player the NFL team that drafts him will be getting.
